Lander honors top Science and Mathematics scholars at annual awards ceremony

More than 50 Lander University students were recently honored for their scholastic accomplishments during the 2012-13 academic year, receiving the top academic discipline and special awards from the university's four colleges. The awards were presented during Lander's annual Academic Awards ceremony, held at the conclusion of the spring semester. 

Receiving discipline awards from the College of Science and Mathematics were: 
  • Blake Roche, of Whitmire, Biology Award;
  • Miranda Boyle, of Greenwood, Chemistry Award;
  • Vicktoria Hernandez, of Lexington, Chemistry/Engineering Dual Degree Award;
  • Ross Armstrong, of Germantown, Md., Computer Information Systems Award;
  • Ashley Esposito, of Charleston, Environmental Science Award;
  • Carrie Forrest, of Pauline, Mathematics Award;
  • Dustan Gregory, of Union, Mathematics or Computer Science Dual Degree Award;
  • Bhargav Patel, of Greenwood, Physics-Algebra Award;
  • Anyway Brenda Kapingidza, of Greenwood, Physics-Calculus Award; 
  • Ashley Bartley, of Greenwood, Prelicensure Nursing Award; and
  • Lydia Sprouse, of Columbia (29201), RN-BSN Award.

Receiving special awards from the College of Science and Mathematics were: 
  • Ashley Bartley, of Greenwood, the Barbara T. Freese Scholarly Development Award, established by nursing professor emeritus Dr. Barbara Freese in memory of her parents, and given to a senior nursing major with a high cumulative GPA and who is enrolled in honors study; 
  • Brandon Patterson, of Taylors, the Mathematical Association of America Award, recognizing junior or senior mathematics majors who demonstrate promise in the field of mathematics; 
  • Brittany Decker, of Lexington, the Nell Henry Award, established by Gwendolyn Burton Caldwell to honor a student possessing the qualities of character and achievement exemplified by professor Nell Henry and who has potential for future scholastic achievements and contributions to the field of biology; 
  • Kelsey Barrett, of Greenwood, Lander Science Scholar Award, given annually by the faculty of the Department of Biology and Department of Physical Sciences to the most promising science majors; 
  • Natalie Boyd, of Cross Hill, Lander Science Scholar Award; 
  • Anyway Brenda Kapingidza, of Greenwood, Lander Science Scholar Award;
  • Ulyss Karl Roesner, of Saluda, Lander Science Scholar Award; and
  • Amanda Rostron, of Darlington, the Greenwood Medical Alliance Scholarship.
