Student Testimonials

From the first time I toured Lander University I knew it was the university for me. I have always had a passion for helping others and teaching special needs seemed like the perfect opportunity. My experience here at Lander has helped me acquire in-depth knowledge of the teaching field and receive a more hands-on education. I get to experience real classroom settings and work with special needs students. My professors have given me all the tools and knowledge I need to go out and teach others. Being a member of the Student Council for Exceptional Children, I have gained a deeper knowledge of special education and seen the challenges that teachers face. Going out into the schools, I feel confident in accepting any challenges that I may face. Lander has taught me how to be a leader, a teacher and a lifelong learner.

I chose Lander because its College of Education produces some of the best teachers in the state of South Carolina, and it is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. I have been able to get beneficial experience as president of the Palmetto State Teachers Association. I am also involved in many other organizations on campus such as being a member of the student life council, the Lander Presidential Leadership Academy, University Singers, Old Main Singers, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Baptist Collegiate Ministries. Here at Lander, I have been able to study at an enhanced level by being an Honors International student. Lander is a small school that allows for great interaction with so many different people, which has helped me establish better communication skills.

I am from a little town in Mexico called Ciudad Valles, which means "City of Valleys." I am an early childhood education major, and I chose Lander because my sister graduated from this institution and she recommended it to me. I chose my major because I love working with children, whether it is teaching them or just playing with them and having fun. I began my higher education at a technical college and then transferred to Lander after two years. The transition was very smooth and I immediately began taking early childhood education courses. At first I was not sure about the major I chose. I heard many people talk about job uncertainty for teachers and I also doubted my own capabilities in that profession; but, the professors at Lander had a passion for teaching children, which had an impact on me and influenced my outlook on teaching. Because of their passion, I know that teaching is not about the paycheck, it is about the opportunity you have to make a difference in someone’s life, no matter how young they may be. Lander has helped me develop as a person and has opened many opportunities for me to become the best teacher I can be.
