Chair's Message

Are you interested in having a positive impact on a child’s life? Do you think you would enjoy working in an environment that is interactive and people-oriented? If that is the case, teacher education may be the right place for you. These are dynamic times in in the field of education and our college recognizes the value of the teaching profession.  We are committed to excellence, and can provide you with a program that prepares you for a rewarding career.

The Lander University Department of Teacher Education is composed of dedicated professional educators who serve as both instructors and advisors.  As a student in the Department of Teacher Education, you will interact with faculty who integrate research-based practices and apply up-to-date technology in their courses.  You will have multiple opportunities to work with children in various settings, beginning your sophomore year.  You will benefit from the strong partnerships we have with the public schools.  And you will have the opportunity to be involved in several education service organizations, such as the Council for Exceptional Children, National Association for Education of Young Children, and Palmetto State Teachers Association.

Our college also offers a variety of opportunities for graduate study.  Graduate programs cover different content areas, including one of which leads to a certificate in Montessori Education. Another offers a focus in Teaching and Learning with three different concentration areas: Educational Technology, Diverse Learners, and Exercise Studies and Sports Programs. These programs provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to become leaders within their areas of specialization.  Many of our graduate courses are offered online or online hybrid.

The Teacher Education Department faculty are first and foremost master teachers, with years of classroom experience themselves. Classes are relatively small and many are taught on our Partnership School campuses. This provides a real and immediate connection between theory and practice. You will develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions needed to be highly qualified elementary, early childhood, early childhood with a Montessori emphasis, or special education teachers.

We strive to develop a positive community of learning within and between our majors.  Our graduates are highly recruited by school districts throughout the state of South Carolina and beyond.

We hope our website provides you with answers to many of your questions about the teacher education programs offered by Lander University. If you want to learn more, do not hesitate to contact me. We welcome inquiring minds.
