Chair's Message

Are you interested in making a difference in a child’s life? Do you think you would enjoy working in an environment that is interactive and people-oriented? If that is the case, teacher education may be the right place for you. As an NCATE accredited institution, our guiding philosophy is to prepare EPIC Professional Educators. Our graduates are well-versed in how to Engage their students by Planning experiences that Integrate content areas as well as the fine and performing arts. Professional educators Communicate and Collaborate with other professionals, families and the communities in which they teach.

The Lander University Department of Teacher Education is composed of a talented group of dedicated professional educators who are well-connected with the public schools. We provide our students with opportunities to begin to develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions needed to be highly qualified elementary, early childhood, early childhood with a Montessori emphasis, or special education teachers. These opportunities begin early in your college career through field experiences with real students in real classrooms. For individuals who already have a degree we offer three graduate-level programs, one of which leads to a certificate in Montessori Education. The second offers a focus in Teaching and Learning with three different concentration areas: Educational Technology, Diverse Learners or Exercise Studies and Sports Programs.

The department faculty are first and foremost master teachers with years of classroom experience themselves. Classes are relatively small in size and many are taught on our Partnership School campuses. This provides a real and immediate connection between theory and practice. You have the opportunity to learn about a technique, see it in action and then practice it with real students. We strive to develop a positive community of learning within and between our majors and model the use of state-of-the-art technology as a teaching tool. Our graduates are highly sought by school districts throughout the state of South Carolina and beyond.

We hope our website provides you with answers to many of your questions about the teacher education programs offered by Lander University. In the event that you seek further information, do not hesitate to contact me. We like to say, “What questions do you have?” – not “Do you have any questions?” We welcome inquiring minds.

Respectfully,
