Performance MonitoringLearning beyond the classroom

Whether it's helping an athlete recover from a knee injury, conducting cardiac rehabilitation or teaching a high school physical education class, you can be sure your education in athletic training, exercise science and physical education at Lander will include ample hands-on training. You might:

  • Serve as an athletic training student for intercollegiate athletics teams at Lander or for varsity teams at area schools. One athletic training major even interned with a team in the NFL.
  • Put your training to work as an intern with area hospitals, industrial fitness centers or other wellness-related facilities.
  • Gain experience teaching and/or coaching students in kindergarten through 12th grade in local public schools.
  • Participate in the student chapter of the South Carolina Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

The Physical Education and Exercise Studies (PEES) Club offers all majors opportunities to participate in service projects including the Greenwood Miracle League, Activate Greenwood, Special Olympics and Senior Olympics. Students also have opportunities to hear professionals in respective fields and to collaborate with professors on research projects conducted at Lander and other institutions.

As an athletic training, exercise science or physical education major at Lander, you become part of a program that has produced award-winning students and alumni. Because of the uniqueness of the department's degree programs, our graduates find a wide variety of opportunities available to them.

One graduate, for example, was hired as an exercise technician at the Cooper Clinic Aerobics Center in Dallas, Texas; another was selected to be the physical fitness director at a large athletic club in Baltimore, Md. Our physical education graduates have been recognized as teachers of the year and one was selected as the National Elementary School Physical Educator of the Year by NASPE. Many graduates are successfully coaching at the high school and collegiate levels.

Still others have gone on to graduate school, earning master's and doctoral degrees.
