Lander University student Katie Penland of Laurens, left, a business administration major with health care management emphasis, has received the Thomas N. Scales Scholarship in Health Care Management.

Lander University student Meredith Milner of Abbeville, a business administration major with marketing/management emphasis, has received the Abbeville Savings & Loan Scholarship. Established in 2005, the scholarship provides financial assistance to a junior or senior business major from Abbeville or Greenwood counties.

Lander University business administration major Piers de Gruchy of Jersey, England, has been awarded a scholarship by Lander's Department of Business Administration. De Gruchy, pictured left, received the Alumni Departmental Scholarship, one of 14 provided annually to each of the university's academic departments by the Lander University Alumni Association.

A group of Lander University business administration majors have been selected to receive Countybank scholarships. Established by the Countybank Board of Directors, the scholarships are awarded to students who are established residents of Greenwood County and who intend to or are majoring in business administration.

Two students in Lander University's College of Business and Public Affairs have received the Charles Park Scholarship. Established in 1992 in honor of Charles A. Park, a Lander business professor emeritus and faculty member from 1960-1991, the scholarship is awarded annually to business and accounting students.

For Gail Moore, Lander University assistant professor of business administration and former member of the University of South Carolina women's golf team, joining the faculty at Lander was a hole in one.

Lander University student Juan Manrique met with some of the nation's top economic experts when he and 11 other students representing schools from across the country competed in the Pearson National Economics Insider Symposium in Washington, D.C., in mid-June.

Eight students in Lander University's College of Business and Public Affairs have been selected to receive the Frances P. Harris Scholarship

Lander University student Kevin Blackmon of Chapin, a business administration major with accounting emphasis, has been selected to receive the Chan Sup Chang Business Scholarship.

Nearly 30 years elapsed between the time that Teresa Pack of Plum Branch received her high school diploma and earned a bachelor's degree from Lander University. But she had little trouble keeping pace with much younger students. In fact, she had the highest academic standing of all of her classmates when she graduated in May with a degree in business administration with an accounting emphasis.

Three Lander University business administration majors have been selected to receive the R. Thornwell Dunlap Jr. Scholarship. The scholarship was established in 1997 in honor of Dunlap, who once served as president of The Lander Foundation. A member of numerous civic, health care and church organizations, Dunlap also served as president and CEO of Countybank and as chairman of the bank board of directors.

In 2007, Amanda Smith of Honea Path enrolled as a freshman in Lander University's College of Business and Public Affairs. Her major is business administration with an accounting emphasis.

Lander University recently honored its cocurricular standouts for the 2009-10 academic year, presenting student life awards to the university's top students and student organizations. The awards were announced during Lander's annual Academic and Student Life Awards Ceremony.

The names of seven Lander University students will be included in the 2010 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, recognizing their selection as outstanding campus leaders.

Michael Goodwin and Rozalynn Banks are Lander University graduates and, nine years ago, he asked her to marry him and she said yes. The setting for his marriage proposal was Lander's Horne Arena at halftime of the 2000 homecoming weekend men's basketball game. As hundreds of surprised fans looked on, he knelt before her at midcourt and, using a microphone so all could hear, he popped the question. It was a romantic moment that also demonstrated Goodwin's ease before an audience, something he has since developed into a second career.

A college education would be out of reach for many students without the aid of scholarships. These funds - which help students afford tuition, books, housing and, in some cases, study abroad - are available because of generous donors who are driven to help provide students with an education and the valuable tools needed for successful careers and fulfilling lives.

Lander University business major Cameron Dorn likes challenges, physical and academic. As a student at Ware Shoals High School, he played football and basketball because, he explained, "I've always been interested in running." That interest has become almost an obsession with Dorn who, at age 20, is one of the top-ranked triathletes in South Carolina.

It was election day in Zimbabwe when Lander University senior Kyle Hicks of Central got off a plane in that country last summer. In fact, it was a runoff in a heated contest for Zimbabwe's presidency. The slate had been forcibly narrowed down to one candidate, the current president Robert Mugabe. The election had been one of many violent and turbulent times for the Zimbabwean people, a nation drowning in a sea of economic turmoil.
