Chair's Message

As Chair of the Department of Political and Social Sciences at Lander, I would like to thank you for visiting our website. Our departmental mission statement is: “Inspiring scholarship, citizenship, advocacy and productive careers.” If I may expand on this a little, what this means is that, as a department, we are first and foremost, an academic unit composed of social scientists and practitioners dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge. We are all actively engaged in research particular to our disciplines, we publish regularly in social scientific volumes and journals, and strive to impart the values of systematic observation, empirical research and reflexive understanding to our students. We also want our students to be effective citizens. Rather than remaining on the sidelines of society, we want our students and graduates to be active and engaged in the world around them. Our department also stresses the importance of advocacy regardless of one’s own political position. We want to see our students standing up for what they believe in and fighting for what they think is right. Finally, we know that the job market is tough and students these days need not just a liberal arts degree, but also help finding gainful employment. Although we offer no guarantees, we believe strongly that our majors and minors offer exceptional educational experiences that will help students find not just a job but a career and a “calling,” as well.

At Lander, we have small classes, talented and engaged faculty members, an excellent array of student clubs and organizations, and a variety of internship possibilities. If you are a potential student and would like to study with us, rest assured that you will be getting a quality education at a great school and you will learn from some very talented professors and classmates. If you are a parent, know that your son or daughter will get a top rate education at Lander and will receive many of the amenities of a private school education at a public school price. If you are an alumnus of our program, please get in touch with us to let us know who you are, what you are up to and how you are doing.

Lander University is arguably a better and stronger institution of higher learning now than at any other time in its history. If you are in the area and would like to pay us a visit, please do so. I would be happy to meet you in person, to answer questions you might have or to show you around.

Thank you for your interest in the Department of Political and Social Sciences at Lander. We look forward to hearing from you.
