Lander University assistant professor of music Dr. Robert Kelley, left, and associate professor of music Dr. Chuck Neufeld, right, will play leading roles in Lander's "Valentine's Collage Concert," coming to the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium on Friday, Feb. 11.
The public is invited to attend the Lander University Department of Music's presentation of "'What's Love Got to Do with It?' A Valentine's Collage Concert."
The Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium is the venue for the Friday, Feb. 11 event, which will feature rapid-fire performances by Lander's premier ensembles and soloists.
Love has everything to do with it, which can be seen in a selection like the Hal David/Burt Bacharach standard "The Look of Love," which will be sung by Tanisha Tolliver, with music provided by the Lander University Jazz Ensemble.
Department chair Dr. Lila Noonkester will sing the Richard Rodgers' composition "To Keep My Love Alive," accompanied by professor emeritus of music Dr. Anthony Lenti on piano.
Two pianos will be heard when Lenti and music major Kelly Hammond play Franz Liszt's "Liebestraum" ("Dream of Love").
The Lander University Wind Ensemble's performances of "Italian Holiday" and "Carmen Suite" are other expressions of the theme.
The concert will feature student violinist Jessica Tenney, who with assistant professor of music and pianist Dr. Robert Kelley, will offer an interpretation of Henryk Wieniawski's "Violin Concerto No. 2 in D Minor, Op. 22."
The only thing the selections have in common, according to associate professor of music Dr. Robert Gardiner, who organized the event, is that "all of them have a romantic or love theme in some way."
The Guy Wood/Robert Mellin tune "My One and Only Love," which Gardiner will play on tenor saxophone, is a perfect example of what he means.
"I'll try to play it in an emotional or romantic way," said Gardiner, who with his group, the Robert Gardiner Quartet, will release a CD of mostly new jazz in the spring.
The concert begins at 8 p.m. Admission is free.
