William Holt, a tea master of the Higo Koryu School of Tea in Japan, conducts a tea ceremony at Lander University as part of the university's Focus on Japan observance. He also described the traditions associated with the ceramic vessels used in the ceremony, many of which he made.

Dr. Robbie South has been appointed chair of Lander University's William Preston Turner Department of Nursing, succeeding Bernice Daugherty who held the position for more than three years. Daugherty has returned to the classroom full time to continue teaching enhanced physical assessment and other subjects. She was also appointed director of the online R.N. to B.S.N. completion option, which South had directed since 2007.

Lander University welcomed nearly 60 international students when it opened its doors for the fall semester on Sept. 1. The students are from 23 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, and two are from Australia and four from Canada.

The Lander University Board of Trustees will meet Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 1:30 p.m. in the F. Mitchell Johnson Board Room. The following standing committees will meet at 11 a.m. that morning: Academic Affairs Committee, Carnell Learning Center Room 228; Finance and Facilities Committee, Carnell Learning Center Room 112; Institutional Advancement Committee, Grier Student Center Room 312; and Student Affairs/Intercollegiate Athletics Committee, Grier Student Center Room 348.

The public is invited to attend a Thursday, Oct. 6, presentation at Lander University by Dr. Russell M. Genet, an astronomer who is leading efforts to develop the world's largest portable telescope.

President Barack Obama has appointed Greenwood native and Lander University graduate Dr. Sue B. Clark to the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board. The board provides scientific and technical oversight of the U.S. Department of Energy's management and disposal of high-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel.
