Ali Hammond, of Saluda, a student in the Lander University Master of Arts in Teaching art education program, was recently awarded the Liz Smith-Cox Scholarship -- which supports the development of aspiring art educators -- by the South Carolina Art Education Association.

Lander University's Equestrian Center will host an Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) event on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 19 and 20, at the Equestrian Center on Hwy. 72/221. Shows will begin at 9 a.m. both days; they are free and open to the public.

The Lander University Department of Mass Communication and Theatre will present its second play of the season, "The Golden Samurai," by Geoffrey Case. Performances will be Nov. 16, 17 and 18, at 8 p.m., and Nov.19, at 3 p.m., in the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public. Doors will open 30 minutes before curtain time.

Tommy Tumblin works as a custodian at Lander University and, once a year, he steps into character as a Santa's helper nicknamed "Tommy Claus," brightening Christmas for many hundreds of needy children in the Greenwood area.

Lander University has announced 10 appointments to the Board of Trustees of The Lander Foundation, which receives, manages and invests gifts for the welfare of the university. Two of the members are faculty appointees: Dr. Paige Ouzts, who was appointed to a second term, and Dr. David Mash, dean of Library Services, who is new to the board.

Greenwood Lander Performing Arts' 65th season continues on Monday, Nov. 21, with an appearance by the Karkowska Sisters Duo.

On Thursday, Nov. 10, Lander University students who have received scholarships from The Lander Foundation will have the opportunity to meet the donors who made the scholarships possible, as the university and community gather for the annual Eleanor Shiflet Teal Scholarship Banquet.

The Capsugel Walking/Jogging Track at Lander University's Jeff May Complex is expected to open during the week of Nov. 7. Athletic director Jeff May, whose name is on the recreation, wellness and sports complex, said the public will be able to use the track at no cost.

Lander University and Greenwood County School District 50 have expanded a relationship that gives teacher candidates firsthand classroom teaching experience.

State funding for higher education was a topic of discussion on Tuesday, Oct. 25, when Lander University hosted seven members of the Lakelands region's legislative delegation. The lawmakers were treated to breakfast followed by a tour of two of Lander's newest facilities: The Jeff May Complex on Montague Avenue, and the Equestrian Center on Hwy. 72/221.
