Lander University has appointed Gary McCombs, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., the university's new vice president for business and administration effective June 3.
McCombs comes to Lander from the College of Charleston where, for more than six years, he has been a full-time visiting lecturer in the Accounting and Legal Studies Department in the college's School of Business. Before taking the classroom assignment, he spent 13 years as the college's senior vice president for business affairs.
McCombs received his bachelor's degree at Clemson University and a master's in public administration from Valdosta State University, in Georgia. He has spent his entire professional career in higher education.
For 16 years, he worked in Clemson's business and finance area as an accountant and later, as director of financial information and reporting, and director of business systems development.
McCombs was also affiliated with Winthrop University as assistant vice president for finance and business. Later he joined Valdosta State University as vice president for business and finance.
Lander president Daniel Ball said of McCombs, "He brings many tangible qualities to Lander, including his successful tenure in business and administration at two fine institutions, a substantial history as an accounting faculty member, and knowledge of South Carolina's political and governmental networks, along with the navigational skills needed with those bodies."
Ball added that, in addition to his executive duties, McComb hopes to serve in some capacity as an adviser, a tutor and a mentor to Lander students in accounting and other academic areas.
McCombs said he applied for the Lander position because, while he found his classroom work very rewarding, he missed "the excitement and challenges of being part of an institution's executive administrative team."
He added, "Lander, like the vast majority of other public institutions, will continue to face the financial challenges from uncertain economic conditions and other funding pressures. I am privileged to have this opportunity to join President Ball and his outstanding management team at Lander as the institution encounters these challenges in its continued pursuit of excellence."
McCombs succeeds Thomas Covar, who has served as interim vice president for business and administration since January. Covar, a graduate of Lander, has been with the university since 2006 as director of financial services with responsibility for supervising the university's accounting system, managerial procedures and internal chart of accounts, and reporting data to regulatory agencies and other constituents. Before that he was Lander's budget director.
