Would-be scientists among middle school and high school students in the Lakelands region will be able to try their hands at crime fighting, exploring microorganisms, chemistry, physics and more when Lander University hosts the annual Fuji Summer Science and Mathematics Enrichment program starting in June.
The summer enrichment program is sponsored by a grant from Fuji Photo Film in Greenwood and offers talented students a challenging educational experience with opportunities for fun and a taste of life at Lander. Classes will be held in Lander classrooms and laboratories.
The program will open on June 17 with "The Magic of Chemistry." For four days, Drs. Ralph Layland and David Slimmer, professors of chemistry and physics at Lander, will guide students as they engage in laboratory experiments using household items to make such things as bottle rockets, soap, glue, silver mirrors and slime. This camp is open to rising sixth- through ninth-grade students.
A course focusing on physics will be held June 24-27. Dr. Slimmer will lead students in hands-on laboratory activities demonstrating different aspects of physics and some areas of chemistry and biology with the aim of making connections to everyday experiences and current headlines. The course is open to rising fifth- through ninth- grade students.
From July 8-11, Drs. T.D. Maze and Jennifer Maze, associate professors of biology at Lander, will demonstrate how law enforcement agencies use DNA technology and other scientific crime-fighting techniques to catch criminals. Students will participate in a crime scene investigation and demonstrate some of the techniques they used during the week. The camp is open to rising sixth- through-12th graders.
Dr. Mark Pilgrim, assistant professor of biology at Lander, will present a program that will take participants on a tour through the unseen world of microorganisms. Students will learn how to manipulate, cultivate and describe microorganisms as well as learn the importance of microbes in the environment, human health and disease, and the production of certain foods. They will also collect specimens for cultivation from different areas on campus and from their own bodies. The program, which runs July 15-18, is open to rising sixth- through ninth-graders.
Dr. Gilliean Lee, associate professor of computing at Lander, will lead students through interactive 2D animation and game programming filled with fun characters and environments using a programming language called Scratch. Students will also learn to create computer 2D artwork and music. The program is scheduled for July 22-25 and is open to rising sixth- through 12th-grade students.
There is a fee of $50 for each program, which includes all supplies, snacks and lunch in Lander's dining hall.
