Lander University will play host to the annual College Goal South Carolina, which is an opportunity for high school seniors and graduates, returning college students and their families to obtain help filing the necessary forms to apply for financial aid. The event will be held Saturday, Feb. 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the university's Johnston Commons.
Fred Hardin, Lander's director of Financial Aid, said representatives will be present to guide students and parents through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), regardless of the colleges or universities the students plan to attend.
He said students can find out more by going to the website www.collegegoalsc.org to register for the event and obtain information about documents they must bring with them on Feb. 18. This year, he said, parents and students can simplify the FAFSA process by filing their 2011 federal income tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service two weeks before completing the FAFSA. "Using the return," Hardin said, "will make it easier to obtain accurate information."
Students and parents are asked to check in at the Johnston Commons in Lander's Abney Cultural Center and, from there, they will be directed to computer labs to fill out applications online. Financial aid professionals will be available to answer questions.
Because funding is limited for those who apply after the priority deadline, Hardin encouraged students to verify the financial aid deadline for each college of interest to ensure they meet the earliest deadline and follow up immediately with required documents. Lander's deadline is March 1.
