Lander University is preparing for its traditional Parents Day celebration which gives students and members of their families an opportunity to spend time together exploring the campus and enjoying a variety of activities.

This year's Ann Mason Hutto Memorial Voice Recital and Master Class will feature visiting soprano Chelsea Bonagura.

Works by Italian composer Luigi Boccherini, German composer Johannes Brahms, Argentine composer Astor Piazzola and Bohemian composer David Popper will be featured in a Sunday, Oct. 7, performance by cellist Dr. Richard Thomas.

Students and faculty in Lander University's Department of Mass Communication and Theatre are collaborating on a production of the play "for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuff," a stark portrayal of the struggles and obstacles faced by women in general and black women in particular.

Lander University associate professor of chemistry Dr. Lisa Brodhacker has been chosen to receive The Mary Frances Poole Alston Award, which is presented to a faculty or staff member for providing visibility for Lander throughout the state of South Carolina, the United States and the world.

Lander University President Daniel Ball said there are "no silver bullets" for solving problems created by challenging economic times, challenges that include cuts in state aid to colleges and universities. But, he told his annual State of the University audience on Monday, Lander administrators at all levels are continually looking for opportunities to lessen the financial burden on students without sacrificing the quality of programs.

Five Lander University political science students and two professors were in Charlotte, N.C., in the days leading up to the Democratic National Convention. It was part of a program organized by Winthrop University's John C. West Forum for Politics and Policy, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to improving civic engagement. The purpose of the three-day program was to enlighten students about government and politics. Lander was one of 10 institutions of higher education in South Carolina that participated in the event.

Greenwood Lander Performing Arts will raise the curtain on its 66th season with a performance by Dailey & Vincent, described by music critics as the "hottest band in bluegrass." The duo and the four members of their band will take the stage of the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium at Lander University on Monday, Oct. 8, at 7:30 p.m.

Seven members of Lander University's Reserve Office Training Corps (ROTC) unit boarded a helicopter that landed on campus today and were whisked off to a casualty evacuation training session at the Whitten Center in Clinton. Another five cadets, who have not signed ROTC contracts yet, were taken by motor vehicle to the training site.

Applications are being accepted for Lander University's fall continuing education courses that cover a wide landscape of interests and skills ranging from digital photography to small business and professional development. There is also a class for high school students looking to improve their scores on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).
