The public is invited to attend Lander University's 2012 Student Honors Recital, set to begin at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26, in the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium. The concert, which is free, will feature the talents of a dozen music students selected from auditions held in December, and works by composers from German composer J.S. Bach to American composer George Gershwin.

A few days before Lander University opened its doors for the spring semester on Jan. 9, students and members of their families gathered on campus for the university's orientation program for new students.

Lander University graduates will gather on campus Friday and Saturday, Feb. 3-4, for Homecoming Weekend headlined as "Laissez les bons temps rouler," the Cajun expression, that translates to "Let the good times roll."

Thirteen Lander University students will spend the spring 2012 semester studying at colleges and universities in Spain, Argentina, Italy, England, Chile and New Zealand. Dr. DeWitt Stone Jr., director of Lander's Study Abroad Program, said this is a record number of Lander students selected to spend a semester at international schools.

Lander University is accepting applications for its spring continuing education courses, the first of which will begin late in January. Coordinator Shelley Grund said there are more than two dozen courses being offered, plus professional and small business development courses, Scholastic Aptitude Test preparation for high school students, a speaker series and two excursions, one to Europe. Some courses have limits on enrollment.

A vacant lot in downtown Greenwood has taken on a new look, with the addition of two painted steel sculptures created by a pair of Lander University students.

Lander University's Board of Trustees has approved an increase of $100 in facilities fees that students pay each semester to help offset future capital costs of the campus. The increase will be effective in September 2012.

For Capt. Thomas Funderburk and Staff Sgt. Matthew Scruggs Dec. 17 had a special meaning in their lives. It was the day they received their nursing degrees from Lander University's William Preston Turner Department of Nursing and met face-to-face with Brigadier General Darlene M. Goff, of the South Carolina Army National Guard (SCANG), who is also a Lander graduate.

Five students were honored recently when Lander University's Department of Nursing held its annual Nursing Recognition Ceremony as a prelude to the university's December graduation.

"Seeing is believing" for Lander University's 2011 Young Faculty Teaching Award recipient, Dr. Cynthia Gardner, as she witnesses her former students teaching in classrooms throughout the region. She points to that as one of her best experiences as an assistant professor of education at Lander.
