Docents are an integral part of Lander University’s educational mission. They are dedicated to Lander’s role as an academic institution devoted to teaching and learning and providing a challenging education for qualified students. Docents, along with the administration, faculty and staff, recognize Lander as an intellectual and cultural center that cooperates with various agencies, schools and businesses in the community.
Lander’s Docent program was introduced in 2005 and has more than 50 members who can be found applying their talents in several campus departments.
Every effort is made to match the interests, background and experience of Docents with the university’s needs. Docents are familiar with Lander’s history, mission, academic programs and cultural activities. They foster public support for the university and help promote and further its goals by sharing their knowledge with visitors, working in departments at a variety of important tasks, conducting tours and participating in community outreach programs. They interact with Lander students as tutors and mentors and may be called upon to communicate with students’ families and prospective students.
Docents perform a variety of administrative duties that are important to the university’s operation, and assist with planning and implementing programs such as special events and cultural and athletic activities.
Lander encourages and welcomes candidates of diverse backgrounds, ages and experience. Qualifications include:
- an interest in working in an academic environment
- enthusiasm for meeting and talking with people
- strong communication and listening skills
- commitment to Lander’s mission
- an agreement to function within the university’s rules and regulations, and to work in harmony with administrators, faculty, staff and students.
Docents must feel a sense of accountability to Lander and their fellow docents as a group. They are expected to be well suited for their assignments, dependable and punctual.
Docent candidates agree to complete an orientation program that familiarizes them with Lander, its mission, academic programs, cultural activities, the layout of the campus and the university’s expectations of Docents. They receive training, as necessary, in the areas where they are assigned.
Active Docents are entitled to the following benefits:
- a Lander ID card that entitles them to free meals and beverages at campus dining facilities
- free parking
- privileges at Lander’s Jackson Library
- free or discounted admission to certain Lander cultural activities and athletic events
- discounts in the campus bookstore
- free use of the university’s athletic and recreational facilities
- walking track
- racquetball courts
- tennis courts
- fitness center
Docents will be provided with blazers and distinctive name badges identifying them as Lander University Docents.
Apply to become a Docent
The Docent program reports to University President and is supervised and managed by the Division of University Advancement and the Office of University Relations and Publications.
Those interested in becoming Docents must fill out an application. Applicants will be screened and accepted based on their previous employment history, special skills or training, volunteer experience and availability to accept assignments on campus. Docents are under the direct supervision of the department head in the areas where they are assigned.
Candidates must agree to submit to a criminal background check, the cost of which is paid by the university.
Docents must be mindful of confidentiality requirements when working in areas that handle student records and other sensitive information.
Docents are expected to observe the rules and regulations of the university and respect all visitors regardless of their sex, age, race, national origin or physical disabilities.
