Three Lander graduates chosen for annual Alumni Association awards

The Lander University Alumni Association has selected three alumni as this year's recipients of the association's highest alumni awards.

YOUNG ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR
Recognizes alumni who have graduated from Lander within the last 15 years and serve their communities in exemplary ways.

Angela Gilbert Strickland, ’02
Angela StricklandAngela Gilbert Strickland, of Irmo, is a native of Wagener. She and her husband, Rob Strickland, who played soccer for Lander, were members of the same graduating class. She went on to receive a law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law, and is with the law firm of Bowman and Brooke LLP, in Columbia. Angela was instrumental in forming the Alumni Association’s Columbia Tower Club, hosting several events for its members and serving as its president. She was also a member of the Lander Alumni Association Board of Directors and the Young Alumni Council. The Stricklands have two children.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNA OF THE YEAR
The Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award is given to Lander graduates who have gained distinction in their careers.

Don Scott, ’75
Don ScottDon Scott has spent his career in sales since graduating from Lander with a business degree. He has been with Thomson Reuters for nearly 30 years and is its sales director for the Eastern U.S., Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Scott is a former president of the Lander Alumni Association and a current member of The Lander Foundation’s executive committee. Lander is a family affair for Scott. His wife Cindy Young Scott graduated in 1976, and their two children, daughter Kendel and son Brock, are Lander alumni. Cindy’s brother is also a Lander graduate as are three nieces and a nephew.

THE GRACE ILER NORMAN AWARD
The Grace Iler Norman Award recognizes significant achievements within the Alumni Association and the University

Linda Latham Dolny, ’69
Linda DolnyLinda Latham Dolny graduated from Lander in 1969 with degree in education. She and her late husband, Steve, were principles in PML Associates, in Greenwood, and she also served on the Southeast Regional Federal Reserve Board. A member of the university’s Board of Trustees, she and Steve created several Lander scholarships. They also served as members of The Lander Foundation Board of Trustees, as advisers in the College of Business and Public Affairs and as sponsors of the annual South Carolina Scholastic Arts competition at Lander. The Stephen B. Dolny Baseball Stadium at Lander’s Jeff May Complex is named in her husband’s honor. She has two sons and three grandchildren.

Nominations are being taken for Distinguished Alumni, Young Alumni of the Year and Grace Iler Norman awards.

  • Nominees for the Distinguished Alumni Award must have participated in civic, cultural, educational and/or church activities. They should have gained distinction in their chosen field.
  • Young Alumni of the Year Award nominees must have graduated within the past 15 years (since 1990). They must have manifested special interest in Lander and their communities.
  • The Grace Iler Norman Award recognizes significant achievement within the Alumni Association and Lander.
