Lander University alumni and friends are invited to gather at the State House in Columbia on Thursday, March 29, for a Legislative Day program hosted by the university's Alumni Association. Current Lander students and members of the faculty and staff are also invited to attend.
Association director Myra Shaffer said she is hoping Lander alumni will turn out in large numbers for the first-time event. It will begin with a breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. in Room 112 of the Blatt Building, where offices of House members are located.
After breakfast, attendees will walk to the State House to observe sessions of the Senate and House.
Shaffer said the event will end at noon but alumni and others who are able to stay can attend legislative committee meetings during the afternoon.
Shaffer said, "Legislative Day will give us an opportunity to meet with lawmakers and discuss issues that are important to the university. It will also give us a chance to express our appreciation to legislators."
Alumni Derek Raper, Class of 2003, and Michael Wright, '04, who are members of the Alumni Association's Tower Club-Columbia, spearheaded arrangements for the event along with Shaffer and Adam Taylor, Lander's vice president for Governmental Relations. Taylor is a former House member, who represented District 16, encompassing Laurens and Greenville, for 10 years. He and Shaffer are also Lander graduates.
Shaffer said those who are interested in attending the Legislative Day program should register by calling the Alumni Affairs office at 864-388-8351 or by contacting her by email at firstname.lastname@example.org
