Internships - Employer Information

How do internships work?

Internships are unique learning experiences specifically designed to help students gain hands-on training related to their major or career interest.  Students look to organizations like yours for opportunities to apply what they are learning in the classroom to real-world settings.

How many hours will the intern work?

Internships can be setup as either part-time or full-time positions depending on the employer.
  • Part-Time
10-15 hours per week (160-175 hours per semester).
  • Full-Time
30-40 hours per week (600 hours per semester)

What is the Time Frame for an Internship?

Internships typically last one semester (14-15 weeks) or one summer in accordance with Lander University's academic calendar.  Fall semester internships take place from September to December.
Spring internships span January to April, and summer internships run from May to August.

Will my business pay the intern?

Payment for internships is different for every opportunity based on the place of business and whether it is a full-time or part-time position. The U.S. Department of Labor provides information concerning internships as related to the Fair Standard Labor Act.  Click here to review FACT SHEET #71

Can students earn academic credit?

At Lander University, internship credit is awarded solely at the discretion of academic departments. Students must meet eligibility requirements of their major to earn credit (if available), and arrangements for credit must be made in advance.

What do I need to consider?

You or a designated person within your organization, will serve as a supervisor to the intern, mentoring and directing their learning experiences, answering their questions and completing paperwork required by their program.
