During a ceremony in the F. Mitchell Johnson Board Room, Lander University officials awarded the top academic honor, the university's Thayer Award, for fall 2012 graduates to John Hudson, of Greenville.

Two members of Lander University's nursing faculty received doctoral degrees in 2012, and they agree it would have been impossible to successfully complete the demanding curriculum and study requirements without the support and encouragement of their families.

The couple decided to retire this summer and plan to devote their time to more leisurely pursuits.

Lander University has received a $100,000 gift from the estate of a Greenwood man to create a scholarship fund primarily benefiting students majoring in business and nursing.

Lander University's third annual "Day Without Shoes," sponsored by the Department of Nursing, was a big success, with nearly half the university's 200 nursing students taking part.

Lander University is accepting applications for the annual Fuji Summer Science and Mathematics Enrichment program for students in grades four through high school hosted by the university. The program, which begins in June, is sponsored by a grant from Fuji Photo Film in Greenwood and offers talented students a challenging educational experience with opportunities for fun and a taste of university life at Lander.

Lander Panhellenic Women recently held a month-long drive to collect items for U.S. troops stationed in Afghanistan. Among the goods collected were toiletries, DVDs, books, snacks and other essentials, as well as Valentine's Day cards, photographs and sorority T-shirts.

Talent, beauty and grace were abundant at the annual "Miss Lander University" pageant, held January 23 in Lander's Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium. Seven students took to the stage to compete for the crown, and this year's pageant incorporated elements of Mardi Gras, drawing on the theme of Lander's 2012 Homecoming festivities.

Tickets are on sale for the annual Greenwood Woman's Club Scholarship Luncheon on Wednesday, Feb. 29, at 11:30 a.m., with proceeds directed to the club's scholarship fund at Lander University. The event will be held in the Johnston Commons in Lander's Student Center and tickets are $25 each.

Erica Sisiam, an instructor in Lander University's William Preston Turner Department of Nursing, has been appointed by the National League for Nursing (NLN) to serve as one of it ambassadors. In that position, she will keep Lander's nursing faculty and administration informed about NLN initiatives including opportunities for research grants, conferences, publications, workshops, and other benefits available to its members.

For Capt. Thomas Funderburk and Staff Sgt. Matthew Scruggs Dec. 17 had a special meaning in their lives. It was the day they received their nursing degrees from Lander University's William Preston Turner Department of Nursing and met face-to-face with Brigadier General Darlene M. Goff, of the South Carolina Army National Guard (SCANG), who is also a Lander graduate.

Dr. Robbie South has been appointed chair of Lander University's William Preston Turner Department of Nursing, succeeding Bernice Daugherty who held the position for more than three years. Daugherty has returned to the classroom full time to continue teaching enhanced physical assessment and other subjects. She was also appointed director of the online R.N. to B.S.N. completion option, which South had directed since 2007.

The medical mission trip to Honduras recently completed by Lander University Department of Nursing faculty members and students was so successful that a return trip has already been planned.
