Lander University English students Wendy Polk, left, and Paula Birch of Hampton have received scholarships to the state university. Polk is the recipient of the Alumni Departmental Scholarship. Each year the Lander University Alumni Association provides a scholarship for a student in each of the university's 14 academic departments. Birch is the recipient of the Margaret B. Tinsley Scholarship and the Eleanor Mundy Scholarship. The Tinsley scholarship was established in 2002 in honor of Margaret Bailey Tinsley, Lander Class of 1937. Before retiring, Mrs. Tinsley worked at The Index-Journaland WCRS. The scholarship is awarded annually to a student majoring in humanities. Birch's second scholarship was established in 1987 and endowed in 1997 by Eleanor M. Mundy, who served as publisher and president of the Index-Journal. The scholarship is awarded annually to an upper-level student or students majoring in English.
