    Lander University students Kayla Frost, of Greenwood, and Oscar Reyes, of Greenville, working with assistant professor of art Doug McAbee, recently defeated McAbee's advanced sculpture students in a "deathmatch." The contest required the two teams to design, build and install sculptures in a 12-hour period.

    Lander University is preparing to open an art exhibit featuring works by graduates of the university's Master of Arts in Teaching in art education program. The exhibit, which will open with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m., on Friday, June 21, will be on display in Lander's Monsanto Gallery through Aug. 1.

    More than 50 Lander University students were recently honored for their scholastic accomplishments during the 2012-13 academic year, receiving the top academic discipline and special awards from the university's four colleges. The awards were presented during Lander's annual Academic Awards ceremony, held at the conclusion of the spring semester.

    The bug sculptures created by students in Lander University assistant professor of art Doug McAbee's advanced sculpture class have been installed at the Lander Art Corner, at the intersection of Edgefield Street and Maxwell Avenue, in Uptown Greenwood. McAbee, who said the assignment allowed his students to "stretch their abilities as public sculptors," added that he was "pleased with the skills the students were able to demonstrate."
