BIOGRAPHY
CHUCK NEUFELD is a choral conductor, a vocal performer, and a studio voice instructor. Chuck holds a Bachelor of the Arts degree in music and sociology from Tabor College, Hillsboro, KS. He completed a Master of Music degree in conducting, church music, and trombone performance at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Ft. Worth, TX, in 1988. In 1999 he received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in choral music from Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ.

In August of 2010 Chuck assumed his post as Director of Choral Activities and Associate Professor of Choral Music and Voice at Lander University in Greenwood, SC. He conducts two dynamic choral ensembles at Lander, University Singers and Old Main Singers. Choirs under his direction have performed across the Southeastern United States. In 2009 he was appointed conductor of the Laurens County Chorale, which serves the larger communities of Laurens, SC and Clinton, SC. Before his assignment at Lander University, Chuck served eight years on the faculty of Newberry College, Newberry, SC, where he helped rebuild the choral music education and applied voice programs. Chuck's collegiate choral conducting experience began as a faculty member at Washington State University, Baylor University, and Arizona State University. He has lead vocal groups ranging from children's choirs to graduate level ensembles for over 30 years.

Chuck has conducted several national premiers of American music, including Dan Bukvich's oratorio From the Journals of Lewis and Clark, Michael Ching and Hugh Moffatt's opera The Corps of Discovery: A Musical Journey, James DeMaars's An American Requiem, Gregory Yasinitsky's anthem 'A Statement of Principles,' Craig Courtney's anthem 'The Gift,' and Stephen Hyde's carol 'Christmas Brings Joy.' In 2010 he conducted the Brevard Community Choir in a performance of Bradley Ellingboe's recently composed Requiem. In May, 2012, he conducted the South Carolina premier of 'Ubi Caritas' by Paul Mealor and the national premier of Ron Davis's 'Sing to One Another.'

Chuck has presented his research in voice science and technology at national conventions of the Music Educators National Conference and the National Council for the Social Studies, the Stop Surfing Start Teaching National Technology Conference, and at the Southern Division Convention of the American Choral Directors Association. He has been an adjudicator and choral clinician with secondary school choirs in South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Washington, Idaho, Arizona, Kansas, and Texas. He regularly works with church choirs and has served as a music minister in a variety of churches and denominations.

As a solo performer Chuck has numerous tenor oratorio roles to his credit, including Handel's Messiah; Bach's Christmas Oratorio, Uns ist ein Kind geboren, and Gloria in Excelsis; Gaul's The Holy City; Saint-SÃ¥ens's Christmas Oratorio; DuBois's The Seven Last Words of Christ; Mozart's Mass in C Major ('Coronation'); Schubert's Mass in G and Mass in B flat; and Mendelssohn's Elijah. His stage performances include roles in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, The Pirates of Penzance, and The 1940's Radio Hour. Chuck has recorded professionally with several choirs, including the Phoenix Bach Choir (now the Phoenix Chorale) with whom he sang for six years. In June of 2011 he performed as a tenor and as a tenor soloist in the Taylor Festival Singers performance of Rachmaninov's All-Night Vigil (Vespers). He is also a member of the newly formed Cecilia Ensemble. He studied voice with Jonah Kliewer, Sue King, and Jerry Doan. His studio voice teaching experience has included high school, college, and graduate level students. His voice students have consistently received Excellent and Superior ratings in South Carolina and Mid-Atlantic Regional NATS Student Auditions over the last several years.

Trained in both vocal and instrumental music, his past work as a free-lance trombonist has included performances with pit orchestras for musical theatre productions, oratorios, and operas in Kansas, Texas, and Arizona. Since 2009 he served as musical director for Greenwood Community Theatre's productions of Brigadoon, Children of Eden, Fiddler on the Roof, and Guys and Dolls. In June, 2012 he was musical director for GCT's production of Man of La Mancha, which featured Broadway singer Nat Chandler and Keith Jameson of the Metropolitan Opera. In November, 2012, he will be musical director for Lander University's production of Snoopy! The Musical.

When he is not making music, Chuck likes to make woodworking projects and follow major league baseball. He and his wife, Judi, have been married for 28 years. Their twin daughters, Kirsten and Lauren, attend Tabor College in Hillsboro, KS.
