  • Lander University Announces Art Show Winners

    Lander University’s 21st Annual Juried Student Exhibition ended with an awards ceremony at Monsanto Gallery. Pictured from left to right are: Cate Blackwell of Greer, first place in drawing/painting and people’s choice award; Melissa Humphries of Greenwood, first place in printmaking/photography; Justin Benjamin of Rock Hill, first place in 3-D art; Brandi Ouzts of Greenwood, Barbara Kinard Cornet Best in Show Award; and Latanya Brown of Lugoff, who shared first place in graphic design with Ellen Herring of Aiken (not shown). Emeritus associate professor of art Bob Poe, who served as judge, said he was impressed by the quality of the entries, which he called “inspired.”

  • Students, Faculty Join Forces for Earth Week

    Victoria Parsells, an environmental science major from Laurens, hands a bag filled with plastic bottles to associate professor of environmental geology Daniel Pardieck, in conjunction with Lander University’s observance of Earth Week. The recycling drive was “very successful,” according to Parsells, who said that a Greenwood County Recycling Center truck was filled to the brim. A shred truck was also provided, and Parsells said that the 2-1/2 tons of paper processed were more than double what was shredded during Earth Week last year.

  • University Releases Spring Magazine

    The Lander Magazine is a publication distributed primarily to alumni, donors and friends of the university to inform them of recent Lander activities and the accomplishments of faculty, staff, students and alumni. Started in 1972, the magazine is produced with diligent consideration by the Office of University Relations two times each year, with issues in spring and fall.

  • Lander equestrian team member has a chance at a national title

    Like other Lander University students, junior nursing major Ellison Poston has been busy studying for final exams as the close of the spring semester approaches. She is also spending time preparing for another final. Poston, a member of Lander’s equestrian team, will compete in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association national championships in Lexington, Ky., May 5.

  • Lander students create website to assist local agency

    When retired Lander University professor Beth Bethel wanted to create a web site for Community Initiatives (CI), the Greenwood social services agency she heads, she turned to Lander’s computing faculty and students for help and advice. Five students in the project implementation and management course taught by computer science instructor Farha Ali have been meeting three days a week since January to work on the project for academic credit. The course requires students, working as a team, to design and implement a significant information system.

  • Lander University to Observe Earth Week

    Lander University will observe Earth Week in a big way. On Monday, April 18, faculty and students will work at cleaning up the stream that rises behind Centennial Hall and flows past Brookside and Thomason dorms. Tuesday, April 19 is Dirty Sock Day, a contest to promote emissions awareness. Clean, white socks will be passed out to participants, who will put the socks over the tailpipes of their cars, which they will start and allow to run for 30 seconds. The dirtiest sock wins a gift card for an oil change. The cleanest sock wins an oil change and an Armor All gift basket.

  • SCSTA High School Festival Termed a Success

    Lander University recently hosted the South Carolina Speech and Theatre Association (SCSTA) High School Festival for the second straight year. The festival provides a forum for high school students to compete in such categories as solo acting, duet acting, group acting, ensemble performance, storytelling, original monologue, impromptu speaking, literary interpretation, theatrical design and readers’ theatre.

  • Student Scholarship Showcase Makes Debut at Lander University

    The Student Scholarship Showcase sponsored recently by Lander University’s College of Arts and Humanities (CAH) was a “tremendous success,” according to Dean Alice Taylor-Colbert, who said it garnered praise from students and faculty alike.

  • Duncan to address graduates at Lander spring commencement

    Congressman Jeff Duncan (R-South Carolina) will deliver the main address to approximately 280 degree candidates at Lander University’s spring commencement on Saturday, April 30, in the university’s Finis Horne Arena. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. Duncan was elected from the Third District last November becoming the first South Carolinian elected to Congress from Laurens County since George Washington Shell 114 years ago.

  • Student teachers at Lander learn to incorporate technology in the classroom

    technology skills and enhance the creative techniques they will bring to the classroom as teachers. The free workshop was conducted by Debbie Jarrett of South Carolina ETV, who shared information with students and education faculty members on the advantages of using Glogster and Digital Story Telling as teaching aids
