Students from the University of Incheon in South Korea are spending five weeks soaking up knowledge about the U. S. at the first American Language and Culture Institute sponsored by Lander University's Office of International Programs.

Eleven names will be added to the growing list of Lander University students who are accepted into the university's Study Abroad program. Dr. DeWitt Stone Jr., director of the program, said more than 100 Lander students have enrolled in a college or university abroad for a semester or a summer study term since he became director in 2005.

Lander University's Study Abroad Program passed a milestone early in May when four students traveled to Spain to begin a special study program for education majors. Their participation in the trip raises to more than 100 the number of Lander students to have enrolled in a college or university abroad for a semester or a summer study term since the current program began in the spring of 2005.

The week of Jan. 30 - Feb. 3 is Study Abroad Week at Lander University and throughout the week students will have opportunities to learn more about Lander's international programs and talk with others who have studied at foreign universities. Thirteen Lander University students will spend the spring 2012 semester studying at colleges and universities in Spain, Argentina, Italy, England, Chile and New Zealand. Dr. DeWitt Stone Jr., director of Lander's Study Abroad Program, said this is a record number of Lander students selected to spend a semester at international schools.

Lander University is observing International Education Week, Nov. 14-18, with several events highlighting international students presenting information about their home countries and cultures.

Lander University's international initiative has created new opportunities for academic exchanges between Lander and nine colleges and universities in South Korea, China and Thailand.

The medical mission trip to Honduras recently completed by Lander University Department of Nursing faculty members and students was so successful that a return trip has already been planned.

The farthest Lander University student Nicole Richmond has traveled from her home in Columbia is Chicago, about 650 miles away. On Aug. 22, she will embark on a journey more than ten times that distance when she boards a plane for a 7,200 mile trip to South Korea, where she will spend the fall semester studying at the University of Incheon.

Lander University president Daniel Ball has signed a memorandum of understanding with a university in Thailand, an agreement that will enable students from both schools to study on each other’s campus. The signing increases to nine the number of Asian schools Lander has finalized exchange agreements with since March.
