  • Another Lander graduate joins the ranks of military generals

    Lander University graduate James Simpson, a U.S. Army veteran of nearly 28 years, has been promoted to brigadier general. He received the star symbolic of his new rank in November with his wife, Zelda, their two daughters and his parents taking part in the pinning ceremony in Washington, D.C.

  • Lander students get a chance to emulate state lawmakers

    Students from 14 colleges, including Lander University, gathered in Columbia recently to participate in the South Carolina Student Legislature (SCSL), an exercise that mirrored the work of the General Assembly. The students actually occupied the House and Senate chambers where they took part in sometimes spirited debate on a range of proposed legislation.

    Political science students portraying Team Obama and Team Romney staged a mock presidential debate at Lander University on Tuesday, Oct. 9, an event that drew 500 spectators to Lander's Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium.

  • Lander students get a taste of what goes into preparing for a national party convention

    Five Lander University political science students and two professors were in Charlotte, N.C., in the days leading up to the Democratic National Convention. It was part of a program organized by Winthrop University's John C. West Forum for Politics and Policy, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to improving civic engagement. The purpose of the three-day program was to enlighten students about government and politics. Lander was one of 10 institutions of higher education in South Carolina that participated in the event.

    Lander University political science major Courtney Priester, of Saluda, is the recipient of the Robbie Barnes Political Science Scholarship. Established by the John C. Barnes family in honor of Roberta J. Barnes' 75th birthday, the scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior female student majoring in political science with an emphasis in public administration.   • Lander University students receive Greenwood Rehabilitation scholarship

    Lander University sociology majors Shakeyta Waller, left, of Greenwood, and Stacee Whittle, right, of Abbeville, have been selected to receive the Greenwood Vocational Rehabilitation Advisory Board Scholarship. Established in 2000 by The Greenwood Vocational Rehabilitation Advisory Board, the scholarship is awarded to full-time juniors or seniors preparing for a career in the human services area.

  • Lander graduate receives assignment to Air War College

    Lander University graduate Lt. Col. Warren Bacote was honored at a change of command ceremony on June 12 at Fort Devens, Mass., where he served as garrison commander for nearly five years. He has been reassigned to the Air War College (AWC) at Maxwell A.F.B., in Montgomery, Ala., where he will be one of 26 U.S. Army representatives in the college's class of 2013.
