Students and faculty in Lander University's Department of Mass Communication and Theatre are collaborating on a production of the play "for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuff," a stark portrayal of the struggles and obstacles faced by women in general and black women in particular.

The names of 10 Lander University students will be included in the 2011-12 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, recognizing their selection as outstanding campus leaders. The 10 were honored recently at Lander's annual Academic and Student Life Awards ceremony.

More than 50 Lander University students were honored recently for their scholastic accomplishments during the 2011-2012 academic year, receiving the top discipline and special awards from the university's four academic colleges. The awards were presented during Lander's annual Academic and Student Life Awards ceremony.

Lander University's spring dance concert will honor former assistant professor of dance Carol Neubner with a performance of her dance, "The Runners."

Lander University assistant professor of theatre Jennifer Sansfacon makes a point about the character of Jet Reynolds, a character in "When You're Already Broken," a play written by Lander student Leigh Coates, of Laurens. Listening to Sansfacon is Taylor Wilcox of Blythewood, who plays Reynolds in Coates' play.

Lander Panhellenic Women recently held a month-long drive to collect items for U.S. troops stationed in Afghanistan. Among the goods collected were toiletries, DVDs, books, snacks and other essentials, as well as Valentine's Day cards, photographs and sorority T-shirts.

Lander University's Second Annual Student Academic Showcase will spotlight excellence in research and creativity during presentations and judging on Wednesday, March 7, and an awards ceremony on Thursday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m. Co-sponsored by Lander's College of Arts and Humanities and Alpha Chi International Honor Society, the showcase will include examples of student scholarship and creativity from the five departments of the College of Arts and Humanities (Art, English and Foreign Languages, History and Philosophy, Mass Communication and Theatre, and Music) as well as from the Social Sciences, the Sciences, Computer Information Systems and Mathematics.

Talent, beauty and grace were abundant at the annual "Miss Lander University" pageant, held January 23 in Lander's Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium. Seven students took to the stage to compete for the crown, and this year's pageant incorporated elements of Mardi Gras, drawing on the theme of Lander's 2012 Homecoming festivities.

Four student-directed one-act plays -- Jonathan Denn's "Holier Ground," Louise Bryant's "The Game," Alice Gerstenberg's "Overtones" and Walter Wykes' "Family 2.0" -- premiere Sunday, Feb. 12, at Lander University, with matinee showings at 3 p.m. and evening performances at 8 p.m. Evening performances follow at 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 13, through Wednesday, Feb. 15.

Lander University Professor of Theatre Monique Sacay-Bagwell has been named this year's Outstanding Theatre Educator by the board of the South Carolina Theatre Association (SCTA).
