University honors top Arts & Humanities scholars at Academic Awards ceremony

More than 50 Lander University students were honored recently for their scholastic accomplishments during the 2010-2011 academic year, receiving the top discipline and special awards from the university's four academic colleges. The awards were presented during Lander's annual Academic and Student Life Awards Ceremony.


Arts and Humanities - Discipline

Receiving discipline awards from the College of Arts and Humanities, pictured front row from left, are: Erin Castle of Coatesville, Pa., history; and Eliza Adusumilli of Brasilia, Brazil, Spanish. Arts and Humanities Special
Receiving special awards from the College of Arts and Humanities, pictured front row from left, are: Courtney Kesler of Ninety Six, Margaret M. Bryant Award, recognizing a senior majoring in a humanities discipline who plans to enroll in graduate school and who will represent Lander well; and Kayla Anderson of Bradley, L'Alliance Francaise Award, honoring the French student who has demonstrated the highest scholastic achievement in French language and literature. Second row, from left, are: Martin Thompson of Abbeville, Barbara A. Jackson Award, established in honor of former Lander first lady Barbara Jackson and recognizing the senior history major who best demonstrates scholarly excellence in his or her history thesis; Kelly Hammond of Greenwood, Music Award, honoring a graduating senior with high scholastic standing and who demonstrates potential for making an outstanding contribution in the field of music education, performance or related music work; Jeremy Babb of North Augusta, Dessie Dean Pitts Humanities Award, named in honor of Lander alumna Dessie Dean Pitts and awarded to the student who writes the best nonfiction essay published in New Voices, Lander's essay journal; and Amy Becker of Beaufort, Theatre Award for Excellence, awarded based on student acting performance, technical assistance in staging productions and scholarship.
