Lander Choirs Holiday Concert Nov. 29

November 17, 2011

The Lander University Department of Music will present a holiday concert, "Christmas in Song and Ceremony," at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 29, in the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public; doors will open 30 minutes before curtain time.

The University Singers, under the direction of Lander associate professor of music Dr. Chuck Neufeld, will open the concert with Randol Alan Bass's setting of "The Gloria," a piece that was premiered by the New York Pops Orchestra and has been recorded by the Boston Pops under the baton of Keith Lockhart.

The University Singers will also be performing Alice Parker's "Personnent Hodie," from a very famous set of six Latin carols called "Gaudete." Both pieces feature Amy Blackwood, Lander's new collaborative pianist.

Old Main Singers, also under Neufeld's direction, will be featured in the middle of the concert, performing Benjamin Britten's "Ceremony of Carols," with accompaniment by Joyce Fankhauser on harp. "Ceremony of Carols" is a group of Middle English Christmas carols that were set to music by Britten during World War II. The choir and the harp engage in intricate interplay in many of the songs, which include carols of enunciation, lullabies, a martial hymn, a carol of thanksgiving, and a harp solo.

The University Singers will close the concert with well-known Christmas music, including "Fum, Fum, Fum," "The Jesus Gift" and "Silent Night."

Student soloists will be sopranos Jessica Hart, Corrie Woods and Markela Dandy. Mezzo sopranos will be Kelly Broome, Haley Shelton, Amanda Kane and Jordan Gates.
