The Lander University Department of Music will present a faculty recital featuring Dr. Richard Thomas, cello, and Dr. Jun Matsuo, piano, on Monday, Oct. 3. The recital will be held in the Barksdale Recital Hall in Lander's Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center, beginning at 8 p.m. Thomas and Matsuo will offer a program of rarely played works, both old and new, by Beethoven, Pärt, Halffter, Cilèa.
Thomas is an adjunct instructor of cello at Lander and assistant professor of music at Presbyterian College where he is director of the college's Chamber Orchestra. He is a member of the North Carolina-based Atlantean Piano Trio and the Greater Anderson Musical Arts Consortium Orchestra in Anderson. He is a former member of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Colombia in Bogotá and the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional of the Dominican Republic.
Matsuo, a native of Japan, is assistant professor of music at Coker College in Hartsville, South Carolina. Before joining the Coker faculty, she was assistant professor of music at Presbyterian College.
In the summer of 2010 Thomas and Matsuo performed a series of recitals in Japan.
Their recital at Lander is free and open to the public.
