Lander University will offer a Chinese language course as part of its fall Continuing Education lineup. The instructor will be Chen Xiaohong, a visiting scholar from Shanghai Normal University in China, who is spending the current academic year working in Lander's Student Affairs Office.
The course will be held Mondays and Wednesdays, Sept. 19 to Oct. 12, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Continuing education coordinator Shelley Grund said Chen will teach students conversational Chinese and give them instruction in forming simple characters in the Chinese alphabet and reading skills.
Grund emphasized that applications are being accepted for the Chinese language course and the nearly 30 other continuing education, small business development, time management and professional development programs.
Students will have an opportunity to learn conversational Spanish, Russian, and beginning sign language.
Basic art techniques, calligraphy, digital photography, pouring acrylic paints and woodcarving are being offered along with bridge for beginners and current players.
Computer courses include basic and intermediate Microsoft Excel and blogging. For the musically inclined, piano lessons will be available for adults and seniors. Health and fitness programs will include ballroom dance lessons and tennis instruction for beginners and intermediate players.
There will be a four-week genealogy course for those contemplating writing a family history and a one-day lecture and field trip centering on living green by blending technology, sustainable resource philosophy and environmentalism in everyday living.
Grund said there will be an excursion to Biltmore House in Asheville, N.C., in mid-November to view Christmas decorations at the mansion.
For high school students preparing to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test, the course SAT Doctor, beginning in January, will focus on strategies and other concepts for improving their test scores.
